Paul Marais has been designing and building sustainable buildings since 1991 and has experience of integrated sustainable design, passive & energy efficient design as well as renewable energy systems and living systems. He is currently enrolled in professional doctorate in ecological building systems and has experience in designing and building rammed earth structures.

Our History

ECOLOGICAL DESIGN

Paul Marais

Paul Marais is a practicing sustainable architect and a Professional Doctorate student at Cardiff Metropolitan University. with twenty six  years of Architectural experience. He has been involved with green design directly after graduating as an Architect at the University of the Witwatersrand. He has developed practical expertise in energy efficient design, natural building and renewable energy. In 2003 he decided to move out of the city and off the grid so he designed and built his own renewable energy system at his new home outside Johannesburg. This system includes a home built wind turbine, solar energy, solar heating and biogas. He is committed to creating solutions that are people friendly, appropriate and affordable.

Projects

Projects that he has undertaken in the last five years include the following
Going Green eco-centre design Port Elizabeth including seven sustainably designed buildings

Tshulu Trust a community tourism project where he designed and trained the local villagers to build a rammed earth chalet as well as a ram pump. He also designed and built an off grid electricity system to provide lights and computer power

A double storey rammed earth cottage in Randburg

Designed and supervised 105m2 Adobe meditation space in Groot Marico

Designed and supervised a double storey strawbale house in Groot Marico

Designed and built rammed earth buildings in Johannesburg, Maun, Lanseria & Cape  TownHe was the course director for Thames Gateway College South Africa where he co-ordinated and taught courses in Wildlife and Environment. He has taught sustainable design and building at Midgard as well as running practical courses in adobe strawbale and rammed earth.
